Friends of the Earth: Help the people have their say at climate talks

Help the people have their say at climate talks

At the end of the Copenhagen climate talks in December, a small group of nations, led by the US, failed to force through the Copenhagen Accord.

This Accord is unfair, and is likely to lead to a nearly 4 degree rise in temperature.

Following the failure of Copenhagen, more than 35,000 people from 140 countries gathered in Cochabamba, Bolivia, this April.

They developed the Cochabamba People’s Accord, a consensus-based document reflecting solutions to the climate crisis.

It contained some very ambitious proposals for action on climate change.

United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change

At the current climate talks in Bonn, the text on the table for negotiation favours the proposals in the Copenhagen Accord.

This is particularly problematic as it weights the discussions towards the least ambitious proposals for action.

Take action

Tell the Ad-Hoc Working Group on Long-term Cooperative Action (AWG-LCA) to allow the conclusions reached in Cochabamba to be discussed.

It is both undemocratic and non-transparent to marginalise particular proposals at the negotiations.

Demand that the Chair and Vice-Chair of the AWG-LCA allows everyone to be represented at the negotiations.
