Authorities say 32 people, some of them financially well-off, have been indicted in a welfare-fraud crackdown.

Brooklyn District Attorney Charles J. Hynes says the defendants stole about $1 million in benefits, including welfare, Medicaid and food stamp assistance.

Some of the defendants owned homes and businesses.

Authorities say one couple — who were in real estate — had about $2 million in their bank account at one point. The husband of another defendant is a wholesale clothing manufacturer.

The city’s Human Resources Administration and Department of Investigation also were part of the case announced Tuesday.

OF COURSE many people cheat welfare in NYC.

HRA has been run by REPUBLICANS (Rudy and Mike) for 16 YEARS now, duh.

You can’t expect these Republicans to crack down on welfare in a mere 16 YEARS, can you?

It can take 500 years to catch a welfare cheat!

CAN WE ALL AGREE THE MEDIA TOTALLY LIED TO US ABOUT HOW GREAT RUDY AND TAX HIKE MIKE are?

How these people who are welfare cheats even sleep at night? I demand that the NY Post and other media outlets publish their photos and their addresses on the front page. This is an outrage.

I want to know how these S.O.B’s got the assistance to begin with. Both myself and my wife are still unemployed with 4 kids and have been denied assistance numerous times. A perfect example of how flawed our system is. Dont just go after the criminals, we need to go after the offices that keep allowing this to happen.

According to the DA’s press release “The largest theft is charged to Liz Sobeida, 37, who collected $460,000 in Medicaid benefits for herself and her two children, between 2004 and 2009. Sobeida is charged with claiming to be a single mother on assistance applications, when in fact, her husband, with whom she lived, was employed as a technician at a Cadillac dealership – earning $70,000 in 2009 – and she worked at Brooks Brothers.” The question is what kind of medical condition generates $460,000 in bills in only five years and who can afford that on $70,000 a year? If she did what the DA says then she committed a crime. But still there is more to some of these cases. The POST should make like a newspaper and dig some more.

Of course, the only way that someone can get away with being on the dole while $2mil sits in their bank account is that no one bothers to verify the informaton on their application.
